Disease Management of Cabbage


1. Black rot: (Xanthomonas campestris)
   
Symptoms:

      *  Most commonly seen in areas having a wet and warm climate.
      * Plants can be infected during any growth stage and the symptoms resemble nutritional deficiencies.
      * Infected seedlings turn into yellow in color, drop lower leaves and soon become die.
      * Leaves may be affected only one side of the seedling.
      * The infected tissue turns pale green-yellow and then turns brown and dies.
      * Affected areas are usually a wedge or V-shaped.
      * Disease progress the severely affected leaves may drop off. The veins in infected leaves, stems, and roots become black in color.  

Management:
     * Planting should be done on raised beds to facilitate drainage.
     * Raising non-host crops.
     * Affected plants should be removed and destroyed.

2. Leaf spot and Blight: (Alternaria brassicae and A.brassiciola)

Symptoms:
 * One of the destructive diseases on seed crop. Older leaves are more susceptible.
 * Initial symptoms are in the form of dark yellow spots on the leaf surface. Later on, the spots enlarge to circular areas with concentric rings and possibly surrounded by yellow halos.
 * In severe cases, the entire plant defoliates. Violets spots develop on infected cabbage seed pots which intensify in wet weather.

Management:
  * Use disease-free seeds, practicing crop rotation.
  * Seed treatment with hot water ( 50c for 30 min) helps to minimize the disease incidence.

3. Fusarium wilt: ( Fusarium oxysporum f.sp conglutinans)

Symptoms:
 * Mostly affects the seedling in the nursery stage. But symptoms are visible only 2 to 4 weeks after transplanting.
 * Initial symptoms appear as the development of yellowish color on the side of the plant.
 * The lower leaves turn yellow in color and later it will affect the upper leaves. With time the yellow leaves turn brown and affected tissue becomes dry and brittle.

Management:
 * Use conventional methods such as crop rotation, seed treatment and destruction of crop refuse will add a little value.
