Rules for Bonsai Making


The following are the different rules (techniques) for Bonsai making:

1. Propagation
2. Season
3. Potting and repotting
4. After Care
5. Container
6. Plant media

Propagation:
       Bonsai propagation is done through seeds, Cuttings, Layering, Grafting.

  • Seeds- Pines and Junipers
  • Cuttings-Ficus, Pomegranate, Mulberry, Bougainvilleas.
  • Layering-Jasmine, Ixora, Pomegranate, and Bougainvilleas.
  • Grafting-Mango, Sapota, Citrus.

Season:
      1.July to August.
      2.Feb to March.

The best time is before the opening of the buds.

Potting and repotting:
   * 1/3 of the roots can be trimmed.
   * Long taproots are to trimmed.
   * Excessive branches are to trimmed out.
   * Balanced nutrition and adequate water is a must.
   * Repotting is done after 2-3 years.

After Care:
 Trimming and pruning are essential to keep bonsai in the style you want and to give its miniature form.
   Pinching - Once or twice.
   Pruning  - For its shape.
  Training - Desirable shape.

It's achieved through a copper wire or polythene tape, to get the branches in a specific position and direction to enhance the shape of the tree. It as to be removed once the desired shape is attained.

Trunk and branches may be bent, tied, forced by coiling them with heavy wire. The wire has to be removed after several months the desired shape has been accomplished.


For trunk:
   * Height can be 6 times the caliper of the trunk.
   * Should lean towards the viewer.
   * It should anchor the plant.
   * Roots can be radiate.
   * No eye-poking roots.
   * Should not move back.
   * Should taper as its ascends.

For Branches:
  * Should not cross the trunk.
  * The First branch should be the one-third height of the tree.
  * No eye-poking, belly branches.
  * Secondary branches are to be alternate.

Container:
   Bonsai containers usually shallow with 5 to 7.5 deep. For the cascade type of bonsai deep pots can be used. Round and square shape containers with 25-30 cm diameter are preferred.

  * Mostly terracotta or ceramic pots.
  * Small in size.
  * Square, round, rectangle, oval in shape.
  *  In round and square shape pots the plant is to be in the center.
  *  In others the plant is to be on the side of the containers.



Planting Media:
 Media Consists of
       Loam soil - 2 parts.
       Leaf mould - 1 part.
      A small amount of Coarse sand.

Media can be covered with moss and one or two pebbles can be placed to give a natural look.

Adenium Obesum or Desert Rose Bonsai It is a South African shrub having a swollen succulent stem and bearing showy pink and white flowers after the leaves fall.
