Dry Flower Arrangement

In recent years the art of making arrangements with dried flowers and leaves is a trend to fragrance a mixture of flowers for keeping in rooms, kitchens..etc.The materials used for dry flower arrangements are any cultivated flowers and vegetables including seed, pods, vines, grains, and also we can use any flowers, weeds, grasses, fern leaves, berries. Dry flower arrangements make our living environment more fragmented with natural items.

Preservation of planting materials like flowers and foliage is important in a dry flower arrangement.
There are different methods used to preserve the plant materials like a Hanging upside down, Burying in the sand, Glycerin method, and pressing.

Hanging upside-down is the best method for dry flower arrangement. It is preferable to those materials which keep their shape and do not fall apart while drying. Materials intended for drying are tied and allowed to hang upside-down from a string without touching each other.

Burying in sand or borax in this method the fine and dry sand are poured to a depth of 10cm into a box or pan. The flowers which should be dry are stripped of all foliage and maybe kept upside down on the sand and then covered with a layer of sand. After two weeks of the time, the sand may be poured off carefully and flowers may be taken out after gently wiping them free of sand with a soft brush. Now they are ready for the arrangement.

Borax may be used in almost the same way as sand and also alum and silica gel are also used in place of borax. Candytuft, daisies, marigold, chrysanthemum, roses, sunflowers, snapdragons, tithonia, coleus leaves, and narcissus are dry well in sand and also in borax.

The glycerin Method is used for foliage only. The clean foliage materials are kept inside a jar containing a solution made up of 2/3 water and 1/3 glycerin. The material has to be kept there until full absorption took place. It takes two weeks for most materials to do so. Materials are preserved keep well for 5-10 years.

Leaves and flowers also are preserved by Pressing between several thicknesses of newspapers and heavy objects kept over them. It will take 3 weeks for complete drying.
