What is Landscape gardening?

Landscape gardening is a decoration of a tract of land with plants and other materials so as to produce a picturesque and naturalistic effect in a limited space. The gardens serve the purpose of public recreation and education. They serve to refresh the body and the mind and retreat for the public from the harsh strains and stresses of hectic mechanical life.

               Garden landscape

Before drawing the master plan you must know the principles of landscape gardening.

1.Background in a garden whether a wall, tall trees or hedges should be neutral in nature, and this should not become a distracting feature over the main feature of the garden.

2. Contrast the design should be such that it breaks the monotony in a garden. To achieve this a variation in form, color or texture should be brought in.

3. The balance should be maintained between different components like masses, forms, colors of a garden. In a formal garden, this can be achieved by balancing the quantity or by objects. In an informal garden, it can be achieved by planting a small mass of color in front of a large neutral mass. Overcrowding of plants or other features is avoided.

4. Open center the central area should be left out of any items of major interest. The best way to achieve this is to have a lawn, which also gives an effect of largeness to the property.

5. Repetition of some features of a garden helps rhythm, balance, and unity. Informal gardens normally same features are repeated but not in an Informal garden. One may repeat the color tone without disturbing the texture, form or quantity. In a circular path can be repeated by having two or three consecutive circularly shaped beds of annual flowers, hedges and shrub borders.
